Disturbed! Feyenoord beats Lazio and wins the Europa League group

A crazy evening in South Rotterdam, but who cares! Feyenoord winters in Europe! In fact, Feyenoord will continue as group head in the Europa League. And that while it was still in the virtual last place in the group until the 64th minute.

After the 4th round, Feyenoord’s group was by far the most exciting of all in the Europa League. All teams were on 5 points. Feyenoord had fantastic papers to add 3 points against Sturm Graz, as they won the 1st game 6-0. But the team from Rotterdam lost and after 5 games were on 5 points, just like Midtjylland. Lazio and Graz now had 8.

Virtual booth
On the final lap, Midtjylland quickly took the lead against Sturm Graz, putting Feyenoord last in the virtual standings. In De Kuip it was still 0-0 between Feyenoord and Lazio. In that position, the Italians were on top with 9 points, Midtjylland and Graz both on 8 and Feyenoord on 6.

With the score after 5 rounds, Feyenoord should already be happy with a 3rd place, which still entitles them to hibernate in the Conference League. At least 1 point was needed for that, but in this case even 3.

Supersub
And suddenly there was that virtual 3-pointer! Substitute Santiago Gimenez made the most of fumbling in the Lazio defense to make it 1-0. As a result, Feyenoord suddenly went from last to first place in the group. Disturbed!
Midtjylland meanwhile was 2-0: each team on 8 points! Lazio suddenly had to work, because with this score the Romans would finish 3rd in the group. Maurizio Sarri’s team failed to turn it around: Feyenoord 1st, Midtjylland 2nd, Lazio 3rd and Sturm Graz at the bottom.

In the 96th minute, Luca Romero from Lazio received his second yellow card.
