With the shame on the cheeks: Atlético Madrid goes against Porto and ends group stage in last place

In the other game in Group B, Porto defeated Atlético Madrid 2-1 at home. The Portuguese are also group winners with this victory. Atlético’s European campaign has turned out to be a disgrace. It could only win once and thus ends the group in fourth place. It is not wintering like this for the first time since the 2010-2011 season.

Dream start for Porto, as the Dragons were already ahead after five minutes. Atlético, with Axel Witsel in the starting line-up and Yannick Carrasco on the bench, hadn’t started the match too sharply and it paid off with an early goal against. Taremi put the 1-0 past Jan Oblak with his fifth Champions League goal.

Porto was clearly the better team in the first half and that translated into the 2-0 halfway through that half. Eustaquio gave the Portuguese a double lead. The midfielder neatly completed an attack from the left. Atlético in bad shape, and that in a game that had to be won to be sure of third place.

At the hour Diego Simeone thought it was enough. The Atlético coach brought two fresh forces between the lines with Yannick Carrasco and Saul Ninguez. But the Red Devil could no longer move the beacons. In the final minute, Atlético managed to save the honor through Ivan Marcano, but that could not prevent the defeat and the corresponding last place in the group. Atlético does not even go to the Europa League and is eliminated in Europe.
