PSV strengthens 2nd place in group stage after great victory over Arsenal

PSV won 2-0 in the home game against Arsenal in the Europa League on Thursday evening. PSV scored 5 goals but 3 were disallowed for offside. The scorers of the evening were Joey Veerman and Luuk de Jong.

In the 1st half it was very opportunistic and even managed to score 2 times, unfortunately both from an offside position. The 1st attempt was by Cody Gakpo, in the 18th minute he was launched and he neatly tipped the ball over the coming Aaron Ramsdale. However, the flag went straight up.

PSV strong in 1st half
PSV was very present at that moment of the match. Arsenal had more of the ball and had some chances, but PSV put a lot of pressure. It was a bit of a shock when Eddie Nketiah crawled in front of the ball and gave Walter Benitez a little trouble, but the keeper reacted well.

In the 25th minute there was a tribute to the deceased PSV supporter Mark. He died in a car accident earlier this week.

Around the half hour, PSV slowed down a bit and mainly lurked on the counter, but the biggest chance until then came from Martinelli. He was able to take and shoot the ball in the middle of the penalty area, but he hit it all wrong and the ball flew out of the stadium.

Goal number 2
Just before half time there was Xavi Simons who scored like a devil from a box, saw his goal also disallowed. A long ball to Anwar El Ghazi was put through the chest for Simons. He dribbled into the 16 and fumbled past the defense before finishing. It later turned out to be illegal, El Ghazi was already offside.

Hatch, Hatch, Hatch!
After tea, Luuk de Jong came on the field and he was immediately important. He put Veerman in scoring position in the 55th minute by putting the ball wide on edge 16. With success, because Veerman pushed the ball hard against the ropes. 3 times is a charm, so this goal finally counted, giving PSV a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t stop there because a few minutes later, De Jong does his bit. A corner from Cody Gakpo is misjudged by Ramsdale. He came out but boxed wrong, after which the ball landed on De Jong’s head.

Offside again
The fun could not end in Eindhoven because PSV was loose. Ibrahim Sangaré started a rush down the right wing and served Gakpo to make it 3-0 but was again called off. He was 2 steps offside. After that, De Jong was very close twice, he was a real danger in the air for Arsenal, he saw his header saved twice.

Arsenal all on all
Arsenal sensed wetness coming and Arteta took action. Arsenal’s team was getting closer and closer to the normal 11 who almost always play in the Premier League. This was noticeable in the game image where Arsenal took more initiative. It just didn’t come to great opportunities, PSV could hold out well.
