KV Oostende triumphs in important cellar duel against Zulte Waregem and straight back after meager 2 on 15

A storm of discharge by the sea: KV Oostende crowned itself the winner of the basement cracker (2-1) against Zulte Waregem on Sunday evening after a late goal by substitute Atanga, and thus climbs out of the danger zone for the time being. It wasn’t pretty, but it was vital. Because KVO again cuts a gap of three points with the relegation places.

Don’t worry: in Ostend the fans didn’t shoot each other with fire arrows, but added value-seekers didn’t have to be by the sea on Sunday evening either. There was a nervous basement squatter on the program, one of those competitions where two low-flyers compete against each other. Zulte Waregem hadn’t looked like the team that put Anderlecht over the knee on Thursday, while KVO was only able to shoot on target for the first time in minute 45 (!). That was immediately a price: a good attack went via Hornby to Boonen, and that hit during his first base place since August 8, 2021. A bright spot after a first half that was full of annoying mistakes, bad passes and a lack of quality. And where KVO goalkeeper Phillips kept the visitors happy twice with an opening goal. In short: a pot of relegation football. One with three gold points as a bet.

The second half was a lot more entertaining. KVO started the second half much better and immediately stuck Essevee against its own goal. Bostyn kept Hornby from the 2-0, and the well-run Boonen also came close to a second bullseye. That pace was unbearable, they also knew in Waregem. Slowly but surely the visitors moved towards the enemy target around the hour. But creating finished chances proved oh so difficult. When there was a threat, people mainly looked to the sturdy Offor. At Ostend they forgot while Vossen also participated. We hadn’t seen that throughout the match, but the equalizer in minute 70 did come off his foot. A dry bang in the short corner put Essevee level. The visitors’ section exploded. (Read more below the photo)

Vanderhaeghe also decided to intervene: Atanga and Bätzner had to ensure speed and a much-needed victory during the final quarter. It turned out to be a successful move. Atanga was sent away and suddenly appeared in front of Bostyn’s nose. It was always necessary to pass to Hornby, but the Ghanaian shot himself cleanly in the short corner. 2-1 for KV Oostende, and again a gap of three points with the danger zone. A storm of discharge was the result. KVO got – in vain – chances to increase the score. The Kustboys were finally allowed to celebrate again with a first victory in six games, but hopefully realize that the road to preservation will be very long.
