| Tonny Vilhena dares to dream: ‘Try to still go to the World Cup’

Tonny Vilhena, who plays in Serie A at Salernitana, still dreams of the World Cup in Qatar. The 15-time international has not been in the selection of the Dutch national team since 2019. “I want to try this season to still go to the World Cup,” he tells Ziggo Sport.

Vilhena was once seen as one of the greatest talents on the Dutch football fields. He ended up in Barcelona via the Russian Krasnodar at Espanyol, which rented him this season to the Italian Salernitana.

Quick base spot
Where the Italian club barely prevented relegation last season, the club is in 11th place after, among other things, a draw against Juventus. Vilhena quickly started playing in the starting line-up and with the occasional goal and assist is a good value for the club. But is that also enough to convince Louis van Gaal?

Vilhena played his last international match in 2018, in a Nations League match against Germany (2-2). On Sunday he plays with Salernitana against the Internazionale of Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries.
