Roberto Martinez is already looking ahead to ‘ideal last match for the World Cup’: “There will be changes against the Netherlands”

National coach Roberto Martinez does not let grass grow on it. After the 2-1 win against Wales, he is already looking ahead to Sunday’s game in Amsterdam against the Netherlands.

“The first 45 minutes were demanding,” said Martinez. “It was very physical. We’re going to draw up a balance to see how far the players are. There are only three days between the two matches, at the World Cup there are at least four. So there will definitely be changes. It’s an opportunity to try something out. I already know how we are going to play but the players are not yet known.”

The Red Devils have to win by three goals in the Netherlands to still win the group in the Nations League. With a win, the final round will take place in Belgium, but that will be difficult.

“We have to try to win and then see where the goal difference leads us,” said Martinez. “If I could choose the perfect last game for the World Cup selection, I would always choose the Netherlands. Because of the preparation, the fans, the historical rivalry, the significance, on the move,… this is really ideal.”

If Martinez is not allowed to sit on the bench against the Netherlands after his red card, his assistants Thierry Henry and Antony Barry do the honors. Thomas Vermaelen remains in the shadows for a while. ( lvdw)
