Supporters of the Dutch national team are not yet warm to the World Cup at the end of this year in Qatar. As it looks now, there are 3,000 Dutch fans in the stands at the 3 group matches of Orange.
FIFA still offers tickets for sale for the tournament, which starts on November 20 and ends on December 18. The World Football Association expects a total of 1.2 million visitors to come to Qatar. The Dutch national team last participated in a World Cup in 2014. Then there were more than 5,000 fans from the Netherlands in the Brazilian stadiums during the Orange matches.
‘No summer World Cup and life will become more expensive’
“The World Cup is not played in the summer now, so it is more difficult for many people to take a holiday,” said a KNVB spokesperson. “It is also not a cheap World Cup and life has recently become more expensive. But the Dutch national team will be back in action in September. That may spark some interest.”
You can also just go to the ArenA
The Dutch national team will play against Senegal on November 21 at the World Cup. This is followed by group matches with Ecuador (November 25) and host country Qatar (November 29). The last 2 matches will be broadcast in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, which will be transformed into the ‘House of Orange’ during the World Cup. The KNVB broadcasts the duel with Senegal in AFAS Live, opposite the stadium where Ajax plays all home matches.
Fanzone with Dutch music
Orange supporters can visit a fan zone in Qatar before the matches, where Dutch music is played. Hotels in Doha and the surrounding area are expensive. Many fans are planning to move to Dubai and want to fly to Qatar on match days. Hotels in Qatar quickly charge hundreds of euros for an overnight stay during the World Cup. No beer or other alcohol is allowed during the competition.
Tent camps in the desert
The organization of the World Cup recognizes that there is a shortage of affordable rooms. That is why tent camps are set up in the desert during the World Cup. During the global final round, cruise ships also dock where supporters can sleep.
