Anderlecht won the Belgian Cup in women’s football for the eleventh time in its club history in the AFAS Stadium in Mechelen on Saturday. The Brussels women beat Standard Liège 3-0.
According to the Mechelen-Willebroek police, 950 Anderlecht fans and 600 Standard supporters came to Mechelen. Among them also 80 supporters of the hard core of Standard, who made the move from Liège by train. The police escorted them from Nekkerspoel station to the stadium.
“It was already clear then that many of them were in possession of fireworks. When one of them, after finding fireworks, was taken aside for a thorough check, he called on his companions to come and relieve him. Our colleagues were attacked and had to use pepper spray,” said Dirk Van de Sande, the spokesman for the Mechelen-Willebroek police.
During the match, the ultras pelted the police with firecrackers. Two dog handlers and their dog were injured. The inspectors suffer from tinnitus, while their dogs are traumatized. In other clashes, two more colleagues suffered head injuries and bruises.
“A supporter who was in possession of cocaine and cannabis was transferred to the police station for further investigation. For the frequent use of fireworks in the stands, the camera images will be viewed in order to identify, verbalize and prosecute the perpetrators,” explains the First Chief Inspector.
Just before the end of the game, a Standard supporter fell from the upper stand. His fall was broken by an advertising banner of the football association, which was stretched in the lower stand. The supporter has been taken to hospital.
In the stadium itself, vandalism has also been done to the toilets in the stands.
