Alison Van Uytvanck dies in second round in Doha

Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 53) was unable to qualify for the third round of the WTA 1,000 tournament in the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday (hard/$2,331,698). Van Uytvanck lost after an exciting game of two hours and 23 minutes of tennis in two sets (7-6 (11/9) and 7-5) to the Swiss Jil Belen Teichmann (WTA 41).

Teichmann will meet the winner of the game between the Belarusian top seed Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 2) and the French Alizé Cornet (WTA 37) in the last sixteen.

Van Uytvanck will also play doubles in Doha later in the day, alongside Kirsten Flipkens. In the second round they will meet Chilean Alexa Guarachi and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez, together in fifth seed.

Earlier in the day, Elise Mertens (WTA 26) qualified for the eighth finals of the singles. The Belgian number one took advantage of the retirement of the Czech title defender Petra Kvitova (WTA 21), who gave up in the second set with an injury to the left wrist. Mertens had won set one 7-5 just before, in the second set it was 1-2 in favor of the Czech former number two in the world. Mertens meets Estonian Anett Kontaveit (WTA 7), the fourth seed, in the eighth finals.
