Rafael Nadal won his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open on Sunday, a new record in men’s tennis. The victory of the Spaniard, who a few months ago did not know whether he could continue his career, therefore provoked a lot of reactions in the tennis world. Including rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who both still have 20 grand slam titles.

Roger Federer placed very laudatory words for his Spanish friend and rival.

“My sincere congratulations to my friend and great rival Rafael Nadal on winning your 21st Grand Slam title,” Roger Federer wrote on Instagram. The now 40-year-old Swiss has been struggling with knee problems for a while – he was operated on last year – and booked his last grand slam victory at the Australian Open in 2018. The comeback of his Spanish rival could therefore charm him. “A few months ago we joked that we were both on crutches,” he writes.

“It’s great, never underestimate a great champion,” Federer continues. “Your incredible work ethic, dedication and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and so many others worldwide. I am proud to share this era with you and to play a part in pushing you to achieve more, as you have done for me for the past 18 years. I’m sure you’ll achieve even more, but for now enjoy this!”

Novak Djokovic, who saw his visa revoked and was not allowed to participate in the Australian Open after a legal joust, also posted a congratulations on Instagram. “Great tennis has been played at the Australian Open this year. Congratulations on your 21st Grand Slam. A great achievement. Your always impressive fighting spirit has once again conquered,” writes the Serb, who also congratulated female winner Ashleigh Barty and losing finalists Daniil Medvedev and Danielle Collins on their achievements.
