1st female manager ever in Minor League Baseball studied in the Netherlands

Rachel Balkovec has been appointed by New York Yankees as manager of the Low A team, the Tampa Tarpons. She is the 1st ever female manager of a Minor League Baseball team. The 34-year-old American has studied in the Netherlands!

Balkovec studied at the Free University in Amsterdam and did an internship at the CTO. She played college baseball herself, as a catcher. It turned out not to be easy to work as a woman in the American baseball world.

She also looked around the Driveline Baseball institute and sent out dozens of applications, sometimes under the name Rae, so it wasn’t immediately clear that she was a woman.

At the VU she studied movement sciences and trained with the Dutch baseball team.
