Tennis player Andy Murray has received a wild card for the Australian Open, the first grand slam tournament of the year. The British tennis player is a five-time finalist in Melbourne, but has not been in the top 100 in the world since the summer of 2018 due to numerous injuries. He is currently 134th, not enough for a direct place in the main draw.

“Andy is known for his fighting spirit, passion and love for the game and I am delighted to welcome him back to Melbourne in January,” tournament director Craig Tiley said on Twitter. “We can’t wait to see you here again.”

Murray (34) reached the finals of the Australian Open five times between 2010 and 2016, but never won the tournament. He did win twice at Wimbledon and once at the US Open. A hip injury seemed to end his career in 2018, but the Scot returned and won the Antwerp tournament in 2019. But he didn’t reach his old level anymore. He reached the third round at Wimbledon last summer.

The Australian Open starts on January 17.
