After a rather modest professional career at Dundee United, among others, Smith became an icon at Rangers as a coach, winning ten league titles, five cups and six league cups. In 2008 they were losing finalist in the then UEFA Cup. He managed the club twice, from 1991 to 1998 and 2007 to 2011. In between, he was also coach of Everton, assistant coach at Manchester United and Scottish national team manager.
