European Open: twenty-year-old Brooksby is the last semi-finalist in Antwerp

The four semi-finalists for the 2021 European Open have been announced. In the last quarterfinal, Jenson Brooksby (ATP 70) defeated Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP 44) on Friday 7-5 and 6-0 after 1 hour and 43 minutes of play. The 20-year-old American has to face the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (ATP 14), the second seed, on Saturday for a place in the final. In the other semi-final, the Italian top seed Jannik Sinner (ATP 13) will face South African Lloyd Harris (ATP 32).

The last quarterfinal in the Lotto Arena started very exciting. The two young tennis players were evenly matched at the start of the first set. The 22-year-old Spaniard came back from a 5-3 deficit to 5-5, but then had to acknowledge his superiority in the California man.

Brooksby, who came out of qualifying and already played his fifth game in Antwerp, continued his momentum. The right-handed player from Sacramento, who won a set against Novak Djokovic at the US Open in the eighth finals, won all important points in the second set and came out victorious.

The 20-year-old American has turned pro this season and has already reached a final in Newport and a semifinal in Washington. He has also won three titles on the Challenger circuit.
