Elise Mertens takes the overall victory at Indian Wells with doubles partner Hsieh Su-Wei: "We are a top duo”

Elise Mertens and her Taiwanese doubles partner Hsieh Su-Wei won the doubles final at the Indian Wells tennis tournament. They were too strong for the duo Veronika Kudermetova/Elena Rybakina in two sets: 7-6 and 6-3 after one hour and 36 minutes. Immediately the first overall victory together at the WTA tournament in Indian Wells for Mertens and Su-Wei, who were already able to add Wimbledon to their palmares earlier this year.

It is her fourth double title this season for 25-year-old Mertens, her second with 35-year-old Hsieh. She previously won the Australian Open (with Aryna Sabalenka), the WTA tournament in Istanbul (with Veronika Kudermetova) and Wimbledon (with Su-Wei Hsieh). In total, she is already at fourteen doubles titles at WTA level.

Mertens and Hsieh sure of WTA Finals: “We are a top duo”

Elise Mertens and Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh won the final win in the doubles of the WTA 1,000 tournament in Indian Wells (hardcourt/8,761,725) on Saturday. With that overall victory, the duo is completely certain of participating in the WTA Finals at the end of the season. The Masters bring together the best eight duos in doubles.

Mertens and Hsieh defeated Russian Veronika Kudermetova and Kazakh Elena Rybakina in the final of Indian Wells in two sets (7-6 (7/1) and 6-3).

“The first set was very exciting, but we showed ourselves the most solid in the tiebreak”, Mertens reacted afterwards at the press conference. “We played better in the second set. We are very happy with the overall victory and our qualification for the WTA Finals.”

For Mertens and Hsieh it was the second triumph together, after Wimbledon. Mertens himself has already won fourteen WTA titles in doubles, four of which this year. “We spend a lot of time together getting to know each other well,” explained Mertens. “We feel good about each other in the field. We also coach each other well. During the breaks we take the time to talk. We always focus on the things we do well. We really make a good duo.”
