Diamond of Club Brugge scores a real striker goal, but Alphonso Davies steals the show with an amazing sprint for Canada

Canada has done an excellent job with a view to qualifying for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. Jonathan David and his compatriots were 4-1 too strong for Panama last night.

The former topper of AA Gent recorded the final score in Ontario ten minutes before the end. The Canadians had taken the lead through an own goal by Anderlecht defender Michael Amir Murillo. Then Alphonso Davies (Bayern) and Tajon Buchanan (New England Revolution, hired from Club Brugge) shook the nets for Canada.

Davies’ goal in particular was remarkable. Bayern’s ‘moped’ recovered a lost ball thanks to a bizarrely fast sprint and then worked fine.

Canada jumps to third place in the standings thanks to the three-pointer over Panama. Crucial, because the first three qualify for the World Cup. After six games, those are provisionally Mexico (14), America (11) and Canada (10). Panama has 8 points and Costa Rica 6 points. This is followed by Jamaica (5), El Salvador (5) and Honduras (3).
