World number one Novak Djokovic forfeits for the Masters 1,000 tournament in Indian Wells (California), which starts next week. The 34-year-old Serb announced this on Wednesday.

“I’m sorry I can’t greet my fans in the Indian Wells desert, it’s my favorite place to go. I’d love to be there again next year,” Djokovic posted on Twitter.

Djokovic does not give a reason for his forfeit. His defeat at the US Open is reported to have “shattered him physically and mentally”. Djokovic came close to a Grand Slam on September 12 after winning the Australian Open, Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, but had to give in to Russian Daniil Medvedev in the final in Flushing Meadows in three sets.

After the four grand slam tournaments, Indian Wells is one of the most important and richest tournaments on the calendar. Djokovic already won it in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The organization also received the forfeit of Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka.
