Italy (FIVB-6) crowned itself European volleyball champion on Sunday in Katowice, Poland. In the final, a young Italian team beat Slovenia (FIVB-9) 3-2. In doing so, it took two sets behind: 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 15-11.
It is Italy’s seventh European title, the first since 2005. Slovenia is vice-champion for the third time. In 2015 it lost in the final to France, in 2019 to Serbia.
Host country and top favorite Poland (FIVB-2), knocked out 3-1 by Slovenia on Saturday, could console themselves with bronze on Sunday. Vital Heynen’s men defeated outgoing champion Serbia (FIVB-8) 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-22).
