The 3X3 Lions were surprisingly eliminated on Saturday at the European Championship 3×3 basketball in Paris. After they themselves went down 20-12 (not entirely illogical) against top country Serbia, there was a somewhat surprising victory of Ukraine against Serbia later in the evening. That stunt meant an immediate elimination of the 3×3 Lions.
With a win for each team, the average points count to determine the ranking. And that turned out to be a disadvantage for the Belgians, who finished third and last with an average of 11.5, compared to 18.5 for the Serbs and 15.5 for the Ukrainians, who both qualified for the quarter-finals. The defeat against Serbia killed the Lions here.
In Paris, Rafael Bogaerts, Nick Celis, Thierry Marien and Thibaut Vervoort, the same quartet as in Tokyo, defended the Belgian colors.
Twelve teams, divided into four groups of three, took part in this European Championship. The top two teams from each group qualified for the quarter-finals. The quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be played on Sunday.
The 3×3 Cats were eliminated on Friday in the group stage of the women’s tournament.
