The healthiest trophy? Why two Madrid clubs are fighting for the ‘Golden Cucumber’

It must be one of the craziest trophies to win in football, but on August 7, Spanish clubs Leganés and Rayo Vallecano will compete for the ‘Golden Cucumber’ in a friendly friendly game.

The friendly tournament between the two clubs, which are located close to each other in the Madrid suburbs, and other smaller Madrid clubs from the region has become a tradition in the form of the ‘Trofeo Villa de Leganés’. The first tournament was organized in 1980, only in 2020 it was canceled due to the corona pandemic. The tournament is played with varying participants, because for example Real Madrid is also twice on the palmares. Leganés, meanwhile in the Spanish second division, won the trophy the most with 21 victories.

The winner receives a very special trophy: the ‘Golden Cucumber’. A consequence of the nickname of Leganés, which is popularly called the ‘cucumber growers’. After all, a lot of cucumbers are grown in the district where the club is located.
