Flamengo, under the command of Renato Gaúcho, won the first leg of the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores by 1-0 over Defensa y Justicia. As much as the victory brings Rubro-Negro closer to qualifying for the next stage, the team’s performance in Buenos Aires did not have a good reception.
According to journalist Mauro Cezar Pereira, “Flamengo playing this way is unjustifiable”. He made the comment while participating in the UOL News Esporte program.
From that, Mauro criticized Flamengo’s change of style for the match last Wednesday (14). He recalled the imposing game mode of Rubro-Negro at the time he was coached by Jorge Jesus. However, with Renato the style was different.
“The style of play that Flamengo adopted regardless of the coach since Jorge Jesus was imposition, having the ball and playing in the opponent’s field. Suddenly, in Renato’s debut, Flamengo played back the entire second half, most of the first half, unable to keep the ball, unable to play, taking pressure and praying for the game to end”, said Mauro.
“Of course there is always a wing of fans, especially those who for some reason didn’t like the previous coach, who will try to justify the unjustifiable, Flamengo playing this way is unjustifiable. Some people say that Palmeiras play like this, Palmeiras is Palmeiras and Flamengo is Flamengo, Palmeiras has its characteristics, in some seasons they prefer this type of game”, he added.
But that wasn’t the commentator’s only criticism. He also pointed out the low performance of big names on the team such as Everton Ribeiro, Arrascaeta and Gabigol. According to Mauro, the performance of Renato Gaúcho’s team does not match the characteristics of the three players mentioned.
“In the middle of nowhere will Flamengo change its characteristics? So it would even have to change the cast profile, because Flamengo’s cast profile is not for that, it’s not by chance you see Arrascaeta not participating in the game, Gabigol does not participate in the game, Everton Ribeiro very little, because the ball it doesn’t pass on the guys’ feet, the team is just getting hit and defending itself, and Diego Alves saving. This performance by Flamengo was extremely dangerous, if this strategy or something similar is used in the return game, the risk of an elimination will be very high”.
The return game against Defensa y Justicia is on July 21, at 9:30 pm, at Maracanã. Due to yesterday’s victory, Flamengo only needs a draw to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Libertadores.
