Elise Mertens (WTA-16) was unable to qualify for the eighth finals of Wimbledon on Friday. The 25-year-old Limburg suffered a 7-5, 6-3 defeat against the American Madison Keys (WTA-27) in the third round. After an hour and a quarter it was over.
It is the third time that Mertens has been knocked out by Keys at a Grand Slam. In 2017 she lost in the first round of the US Open 6-3 and 7-6 (8/6) to the American, in 2019 in the third round of the Australian Open 6-3 and 6-2.
Keys has reached at least the quarterfinals at every Grand Slam. She was a semifinalist at the 2015 Australian Open and Roland-Garros in 2018 and a losing finalist at the US Open in 2017. At Wimbledon, a quarterfinal in 2015 is her best result. To equal that, the 26-year-old American has to pass the Swiss Viktorija Golubic (WTA-66), who shoved the American Madison Brengle (WTA-82) 6-2 and 6-1 aside.
