Elise Mertens (WTA 16) has qualified for the third round at Wimbledon on Wednesday, the third grand slam tournament of the season. Greet Minnen (WTA 118) and Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 57) are eliminated.
The Belgian number 1, the 13th seed, easily won 6-2 and 6-0 in the second round against the Chinese Lin Zhu (WTA 99). The match at Court 17 of the All England Club lasted just 58 minutes.
In the third round, Mertens will compete against the winner of the American meeting between Lauren Davis (WTA 91) and Madison Keys (WTA 27).
Mertens is in the Wimbledon main draw for the fourth time. In 2019 she reached the eighth finals, her best result so far on the London grass.
Greet Minnen immediately down on debut
Greet Minnen (WTA 118) is eliminated in the first round. The qualifier went down in two sets 6-2 and 7-6 (7/5) against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA 75).
In the first set, Minnen went through the service of her opponent at 1-1. Tomljanovic, however, reacted with three breaks: 6-2. Minnen had to surrender her serve game at 3-2 in the second set, but she fought back in the match and forced a tiebreak. Tomljanovic was too strong with 7/5.
Minen was on the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time. Her duel with Tomljanovic should have taken place on Tuesday, but due to the rain, the match was postponed to Wednesday.
In the second round Tomljanovic plays against Alizé Cornet (WTA 58). The Frenchwoman surprised the Canadian fifth seed Bianca Andreescu (WTA 7) with clear 6-2 and 6-1 figures. Andreescu won the US Open in 2019.
First round also the end station for Van Uytvanck
Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 57) was also unable to provide a stunt in the opening round of Wimbledon. She lost in three sets to the Ukrainian third seed Elina Svitolina (WTA 5): 6-3, 2-6 and 6-3.
Van Uytvanck underwent knee surgery this spring but recently proved to be in good shape in Nottingham, where she won an ITF 100,000 tournament. In the first set she immediately went through the service of Svitolina, two years ago semi-finalist on the London grass. But the Ukrainian did not show up and won the first set 6-3. In the second set, Van Uytvanck managed two breaks: 2-6. In a third set with no less than six breaks, Svitolina took the victory 6-3.
Van Uytvanck’s best performance at Wimbledon dates back to 2018, when she made it to the fourth round.
In the next round, Svitolina will face the Polish Magda Linette (WTA 44), who was too strong for the American Amanda Anisimova (WTA 81) in the first round with 2-6, 6-3 and 6-1.
On Tuesday, Elise Mertens (WTA 16) started well in the third grand slam tournament of the season. The Belgian number 1 defeated the British Harriet Dart (WTA 142) in the first round, who received a wild card, in two sets: 6-1 and 6-3. In the second round, Mertens will take on the Chinese Lin Zhu (WTA 99) later in the day.
