WIMBLEDON. Elise Mertens start tegen thuisspeelster, Van Uytvanck krijgt wereldtopper in eerste ronde

Elise Mertens (WTA-16) will take on British Harriet Dart (WTA-141) in the first round of Wimbledon, who can participate thanks to a wildcard. For Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA-57) a much heavier opponent came out of the draw on Friday. She will meet the Ukrainian third seed Elina Svitolina (WTA-5), who was still semi-finalist at the previous edition in 2019.

Mertens took on Dart once before. In 2014, she defeated the then very young 24-year-old British on hard courts 6-2 and 6-1 at an ITF tournament in Ponta Delgada (Azores). If Mertens also wins this time, she will face a duel with the Chinese Zhu Lin (WTA-99) or the German Mona Barthel (WTA-187) in the second round.

Van Uytvanck also looked her opponent in the eye once before. In 2015, she had to beat Svitolina on the hard court of Indian Wells with 4-5, 7-6 (7/4) and 6-1. If she can surprise the 26-year-old Ukrainian this time, she will compete in the second round against the Polish Magda Linette (WTA-44) or the American Amanda Anisimova (WTA-79).

Qualifying player Greet Minnen (WTA-119) faces Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA-72) for the first time. If she takes that hurdle, the French Alize Cornet (WTA-63) or the Canadian Bianca Andreescu (WTA-7) will be the next opponent.

There are no Belgians on the main draw for the men.
