It needed some work but Serena Williams has secured a spot in the 2nd round of Roland Garros! The 23-time Grand Slam winner defeated the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu: 7-6 (6) and 6-2!
The game was scheduled for 9:00 PM, making it the 1st evening session in the history of the tournament. Now that Roland Garros is played with evening games, the tournament is much more attractive for those interested in other parts of the world.
39-year-old Williams is number 8 in the world and was 6-4 behind in the tiebreak of the 1st set. Then she won no less than 4 points. In the 2nd set it went a lot easier for Williams, who cashed in the win after an hour and 42 minutes on her own service.
Evening sessions have been used for years at the Australian Open and the US Open. The game was played in front of empty stands because a curfew is in force in Paris. Williams last reached the final of RG in 2016.
