The volleyball season gets its traditional climax between Maaseik and Roeselare. It is the 26th time in a row that the title will go to one of those two clubs.
Both Maaseik and Roeselare on Saturday already secured a place in the final on the fourth day of the Final Four, which will be played to a best of five. Maaseik defeated Haasrode Leuven 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 26-28, 25-22), Roeselare beat Menen with 0-3 (26-28, 21-25, 11-25). In the standings, Maaseik keeps one point ahead of Roeselare. Next week, the mutual game may decide about the home advantage in the final.
In the last quarter of a century, Maaseik and Roeselare divided the titles. The fact that the championship was not won by one of the two clubs dates back to 1994. Then Zellik became champion. Maaseik has collected sixteen titles since 1991, Roeselare since 1989 eleven. Maaseik has been in charge since 2018. It then ended a series of five titles in a row for the West Flemish and extended his reign in 2019. Last year the championship could not be completed due to the pandemic and no title was awarded.
In the Challenge Final 4, in which the last European ticket is being competed, Achel booked a smooth 3-0 victory against Waremme on Saturday. The set positions were 25-19, 25-16 and 25-20. Ghent and Aalst will fight their game on Sunday. In the standings, Achel is in the lead with 9 points, ahead of Aalst (6), Ghent (4) and Borgworm (2).
